DIY Repurposed Earrings Tutorial

Hello Fabulous People,

One of the things I enjoy most, is repurposing old junk items into new found treasures! Not only is reusing/recycling great for the environment, but it also means you can create some unique, one-of-a-kind, pieces of art!

For this project, the supplies I had on hand were given to me by a friend. I helped her with an estate sale, so she gave me several bags of leather and vinyl scraps, and a bunch of broken jewelry. Knowing that I love to craft, she figured I could turn them into something great! Honestly, I have had the items for a couple of years, they got put in a box with the rest of my crafts, and I just unearthed them this week! Excited and full of inspiration, I started creating earrings and cuffs. So, in this tutorial, I am going to show you how to create four pairs of fab earrings, with mostly repurposed supplies.

The supplies you will need for this project are:
  • leather or vinyl scraps
  • earring hooks or rings
  • bits of broken necklace
  • bits of broken chain
  • feathers
  • ribbon
  • jump rings
  • clamps
  • scissors
  • needle nose pliers
  • hole punch
  • blue painters tape
  • spray paint
  • craft glue
  • ruler
  • paper & pen
First, choose the leather/vinyl, and the shape that you want. I drew a couple different shapes on paper, then I cut them out, and traced them onto the back of the leather. Cut out the shapes in the fabric of your choice. If you want to do the earrings that are spray painted, then you will tape off a section of your cut out, spray paint and allow to dry completely.

After the shape has dried, you can punch a hole in the leather. I used the 1/8" setting on my punch. Now it's time to embellish them. Add some real feathers, glitz, or bling! If you are using chain, cut a couple of different chain lengths. My leather shapes were just a bit bigger than 3", so I cut my longest length of chain at 3". And then I did two smaller, so that all three hung at different heights.

Depending on what pair of earrings you're creating, you will now attach the chain and leather together, by adding a jump ring.

If you are creating the earrings that have real feathers attached, you can simply add a dot of craft glue to the leather, and place your feathers accordingly. I reinforce the bond, by adding a clamp to the top of the feathers to hold them tightly in place. You can also add a bit more, by attaching a section of ribbon to the top, and a section of chain or charms.

There are endless possibilities! Plain leather shapes, paint, no paint, feathers, jewels, chain! Let your imagination run wild! Go create something awesome, and please share! I would love to see your works of art, so tag #swizzlesandsunshine on Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter, or Facebook!
